CONSTRUCTION
Every model maker has his own method of working, but most start with the hull, with which we will begin our building hints. Our model has the characteristic full lines forward of the modern tug, a trend first noticeable during the 1920's and since developed to a peak of efficiency. There are several systems which can be adopted for the construction of Ionia's hull, rib and plank, metal plating, fibre-glass, etc., but possibly one of the best is that known as the bread and butter method. The size of the hull makes the choice of balsa as a building material one to be recommended,
TOWARDS the end of 1960 the latest addition to Messrs Watkins' fleet, the 207.85 ton Ionia, built by Richard Dunstan Ltd., of Yorkshire, appeared on the Thames.
Watkins' first tug, the Monarch, over 120 years ago, and therefore, is a direct development in tug design right through from those early days. Indeed, Ionia looks and feels like a thoroughbred, an appearance which can be successfully reproduced in a model. lonia has an overall length of 98 feet which will make a model, using the 3/8 in. to a foot scale, 36 3/4 in. long, having a beam of 9 3/8 in.
